Since Johnson County is no longer in the 121st District, I've changed the name to reflect the district in which I'm located, the 51st. Not yet absolutely committed to run yet, though.

Before I make plans for 2012, I'll see what the redistricting does to the 121st - and maybe to me. I wouldn't be surprised if I suddenly found myself in the 120th (Henry County and environs); it's only 1/2 mile away.

Last chance to reach the voters

The KOKO debate was last night, and the Daily Star Journal posted their candidate surveys yesterday. I've posted my notes for the KOKO event and my answers to the Daily Star Journal at my political website. This includes a link to the Daily Star Journal, who published their surveys in a comparative format.

Last Friday, we were in the UCM Homecoming parade, back just ahead of the horses. This Friday, we'll be in downtown Warrensburg from 4-6 PM promoting LP candidates and handing out candy to the costumed hordes.

2 months to election day

It's slightly less than two months until election day. I printed up little fliers stating my general qualifications and a few positions, but not the full gamut. As a realist, I believe that these positions are achievable (even if they are only partial steps toward a free society).

* Pass the FAIR TAX - get rid of taxes that limit incentive to produce.
* Decriminalize possession of marijuana, as a start to ending the war on drug users. Start with medical marijuana if we must, but empty the jails of small time users.
* Pass school choice and allow vouchers. Create better education through competition.
* Eliminate eminent domain abuse by stopping its use for "economic development." Homes & businesses should not be taken from one private party & given to another.
* Limit market-distorting "incentives," such as TIF, TDD, NID, etc. Too often they're issued on trumped-up forecasts & promises, and the taxpayers end up supporting much more than was expected. I'd like to eliminate them, but as long as other states use them, that's probably unrealistic.
* Sunset all taxes - There should be NO permanent taxes. All taxes should sunset in 10 years, requiring a vote to renew, unless tied to a specific bond issue (which should not be renewable).
* Stop legislating science - Renewable energy mandates cost us money and favor some technologies over others that may be more promising. Let the market decide.
* Stop legislating morality involving consenting adults - Get the state out of the marriage business (other than registering contracts), the adult entertainment business (remember, I said "consenting adults"), etc.
* Allow concealed carry by any adult who can legally own a firearm, without permission of the state.

I'm sure there's more that I can take a stand on. That's enough for now.

Clinton's Olde Glory Days

I participated in Clinton's Olde Glory Days parade yesterday. While its not in my district, I thought it would be a good place to display the Fed Up in Missouri campaign, since the parade is watched by several thousand people. The Constitution Party has a presence in Henry County while Libertarians have not. Here are some pictures of my car as it appeared in the parade.

Yes, I filed for the 121st District last Tuesday, and set up my Facebook page for the race. Next step will be to update the website (www.olddrum.net) to use for statements, candidate surveys, etc. I'll use the Facebook page for day-to-day comments. Y'all are invited to follow me there.

My thanks to those who voted for me in the November election. While I would have liked to get a somewhat larger percentage of the vote, 4.69% is a substantial vote for a 3rd party candidate - especially since I didn't have the opportunity to campaign directly. I especially thank those in the western part of the district (6.5%+ in North Holden - over 5% in S. Holden and Centerview).

I'd ask those who are interested in smaller government and individual liberty to check out the Libertarian Party. We meet locally on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, but you can reach us through our website, johnson.lpmo.org any time.

Home stretch

We're on the home stretch. I appreciate all the good comments from people who attended or listened to the candidate forum Monday night. I've placed ads in the Daily Star Journal and Holden Image; my interview in the DSJ was published the other day.

Remember, the incumbent, David Pearce, is going to win reelection easily. So if you agree with me on property rights issues, you might as well tell him that property rights need to be protected. You can do that by voting for me - if you're a Republican you won't cost your party a seat; if you're a Democrat your party won't fail to gain a seat if you desert their candidate for me. So help me send a message and vote for Bill Wayne, Libertarian, on November 7th.

Events!

Wednesday I went to the UCM (formerly CMSU) Political Awareness event at the Union. Not well attended by students or faculty, unfortunately. Only one corridor got much traffic, but I did get to meet some other people running for various offices.

Thursday-Saturday (Sep 28-30) I'll be at the Holden Fall Fiesta with a booth and also in the parade. Holden is in the 121st District, but a lot of their market area isn't - but the issues of property rights and eminent domain are important to all. If you'd like to talk to me about property rights, see me there.

I talked to the UCM 3rd Party Alliance about a candidate debate at UCM. Democratic canddiate Jeffrey Alvorado and I are both intersted; from what I hear incumbent David Pearce isn't. If it comes off, it'll likely be in mid-October.

I'm also awaiting word on when the Farm Bureau candidate forum will take place. I know they're already committed to Pearce but perhaps I can sway a few votes there with property rights issues that are unaddressed.

Blogs and Stuff

I haven't done a good job of keeping this blog up to date - too many other things going on. Went to the State Fair and had a Vote Libertarian hat made, which I'll wear over many campaign seasons (if anyone wants one, I have the contct - they're $5 ea if a dozen or more are ordered). My weekly program on KOKO is making good points, especially when contrasted with the Democratic candidate's program 20 minutes earlier. People are saying that I "make sense" - that doesn't mean they'll vote for me, but I certainly hope they will. Events coming up are the CMSU Politiical Awareness Fair, the Holden Fair, and the CMSU homecoming parade.

Lots more candidate surveys, most of which I won't have time to deal with this time. Just VoteSmart.com and maybe a couple of others.

Time to Think Libertarian

The primary election is over and Libertarians didn't get many votes. That's to be expected. Here are some reasons:

1. Who takes which ballot is a matter of record. Parties can have poll observers to see the if their loyalists are jumping ship. That discourages 3rd party voting.
2. Party primaries attract mostly party loyalists/activists. While. Few of them will vote outside their party, because many of them are 'true believers.' Fewer independent or swing voters vote.
3. People want to vote where there's a contest. The Libertarians had no opposed candidates.
4. Locally, many Libertarians decided to skip our primary in order to vote in a sharply-defind race for Associate Circuit Judge - and were pleased to contribute to Karl Timmermann's narrow victory.

Now that the general election campaign has started, I certainly hope people will take a close look at our Libertarian candidates. Most of us have websites where you can find out what our philosphy is and where we stand on issues due to come before the office we seek. For example, I have made clear my opposition to abuse of eminent domain, TIF, TDD and other government subsidies of businesses. I welcome people to look at my website olddrum.net to see not only my posiitons on this race but also what I've written on political issues over the past 9 years.

I voted Libertarian by absentee ballot. I know, with all the races on the Republican side, that it's sometimes difficult to pick up a 3rd party ballot in an uncontested primary, but if you do so, your vote is welcome. Since both of my opponents have "informational" programs on KOKO, I decided to do one myself. I'll be on every Wednesday for 15-20 minutes at 9:10 AM, starting July 25th. The first program will discuss my background, qualifications, and so forth. After that, it'll be mostly issues.

Alvardo's off base again

Democrat Jeffrey Alvarado doesn't understand how the legislature is required to work. On KOKO today, he was upset that the legislature would have a special session to add people back into Medicare. He's for adding them, but doesn't understand why a special session would be required - he thinks new items can be considered during the "veto session." WRONG. During the "veto session" they can only consider overriding governor vetoes. That's why they call a special session in conjunction with the veto session.

Well, at least he's started discussing state issues a bit.

Informed Voters?

It apears that I'm the only candidate for 121st Dist State Rep who is making my views widely known. While I've posted all my answers to candidate surveys (20+ of them) on my website, my two opponents don't even have websites. I mean, why tell people where you stand when you can let them make assumptions from your "label."

Come on guys, get a website. Post your candidate surveys. Let's tell the voters where we all really stand.

Property Rights Position Paper

I have published a position paper with a short discussion of a number of property rights issues and my proposed action on each. This paper addresses eminent domain, tax increment financing, transportation development districts and zoning. You can see it at my campaign website.

My collection of candidate surveys is now up to 21. I have tried to be consistent in my answers, but subtle changes in the way many of the questions are asked make it difficult to give exactly the same answer to similar questions. Also, mst surveys want a "yes" or "no" answer to a complex question, and some are on issues I know little about (hey, we can't all be experts on everything!). In any case, they're all posted on-line at the campaign website.

If anyone has questions on my position on any issue, just ask. I'll do my best to give a straight answer.

Zoning and Such

My opinion of county-wide zoning is well-known around Warrensburg. I'm "agin" it - with good reason. If anyone hasn't read the Daily Star Journal article on a zoning appeal in Warrensburg, at least see the summary on my personal blog. Then you'll see why, if elected, I'll work to make it difficult for city folks to force zoning on those who live in the country.

5 Months to Go

It's only 5 months until the General Election. Where does time go? I guess I'll need to start campaigning some.

As a first step, I've posted to my campaign website ALL of the 18 candidate questionnaires I've received and answered. I scanned them and put them into Adobe PDF format, a universally-recognized cross-platform one that anyone can read. Some are pretty big. To read them, go to OldDrum.Net a click on "Surveys".

I'm sorry to have missed the Knob Noster Fair this week/weekend, but my wife, Sandra, had a surprise visit to the emergency room last weekend and needed my assistance at home. Family needs ALWAYS come first. Anyway, you Knob Noster folks, I'm not ignoring you and I'll try to get some campaigning in over there later in the year.

Campaign Finance & Questionnaires

I attended a campaign finance seminar yesterday evening. I can spend up to $500 in the primary and in the general election campaign without creating a committee or reporting in detail, but local candidates can spend up to $1000 in each election. Meanwhile, my mail box is inundated by paper spam from outifts wanting to sell campaign materials. I need to do some pricing on essentials, like bumper stickers and yard signs, and find out what the other candidates are paying for those mini-programs on KOKO.

Meanwhile, the candidate surveys keep pouring in. One from another pro-choice group, one from a very conservative group, and one from pro-business group. Still none using electronic media - what, pray tell, is so difficult about making a survey available in Word format at a group's website? So it could be downloaded and actually TYPED and returned by email?
I hope that I'll get one from the NRA, seeing as I've been a member for about 40 years, but I doubt that I will. The NRA won't consider Libertarian candidates, even when we're sounder on the 2nd Amendment than the D or R candidates they endorse - to them, the winning percentage is everything since that's how they prove their clout.

It's Questionnaire Time

So far, I've received 5 candidate questionnaires. Two were from "Pro-Choice" groups, two were from teacher unions, and the other from PromoPac (GLBT issues). I doubt if I'llget any endoresements from these groups, since I'll provide a lot of "half-a-loaf" answers - while I may agree with some of their objectives, as a good Libertarian I don't think government mandates are the way to acheive them.

The best survey was from a local pro-choice group. They asked for detailed answers to their questions, giving me a chance to explain my position. NARAL and the Missouri NEA just allow "yes" or "no" answers. The MSTA and PromoPac left a little room for comment.

Since all the early-bird surveys are from groups traditionally associated with the Democrats, I'm wondering when I'll start seeing surveys from the other side - and how many toal surveys I'll see. I also wonder why they're all working strictly with paper instead of allowing an on-line option.

I'll post my surveys and answers to my campaign website; I want my positions on issues known, for good or for ill.

Alvarado's off base

My Democratic opponent, Jeffrey Alvarado, has attacked a bill authored by my Republican opponent, State Rep David Pearce (published in the "letters" section of the forum at digitalBurg.com. The bill in question HB1549 "llows a miltary veteran to submit a certificate of release or discharge from active duty (DD214) instead of a birth certificate as proof of lawful presence when obtaining a driver's or nondriver's license." Mr. Alvarado thiks it would open the door for terrorists.

Frankly, I can't see what Mr. Alvarado is so worked up about. While identity theft is a real problem, it's more likely to be done by criminals than by terrorists. I don't know if anybody can walk in off the street and get my DD214, but if they can, they can use it for whatever nefarious purposes they have in mind with or without the provision of HB1549 (theo ne that wants to let veterans use the DD214 instead of a birth certificate when getting a drivers license).

There are plenty of real issues separating the three candidates in this race; perhaps we can concentrate on them rather than knocking down a straw man. Besides, I can find my DD214 more easily than my birth certificate.
